Poker Pros Debate: Which Game Favors the Chip Leader?
Daniel Negreanu posted a poker question on Twitter, asking which game gives the chip leader a better chance of winning: No-Limit Hold'em (NLH) or Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO). The scenario involves a final table with standard payouts, equal-skilled players, a chip leader with 100bb, and an average stack of 20bb.
Many players and experts weighed in on the debate. The chatbot Grok confirmed that in NLH, the chip leader has a higher chance of winning due to lower variance, allowing them to pressure short stacks more effectively. Scott Seiver noted that the outcome depends on the level of play and whether players regularly face each other.
Shaun Deeb suggested that in PLO, there is less variance and a higher expectation because in certain spots, opponents will call with a smaller percentage of hands. Adam Owen stated that PLO is more advantageous, especially with antes, as the win rate is higher, and the chip leader has more opportunities to open with raises pre-flop. Daniel Negreanu concluded that in PLO, the chip leader can play many hands and often be in situations where they are favored 60-40 or even in a coin flip.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
