Poker Legends Weigh In: Are Solvers Killing the Game?
Doyle Brunson, a legendary poker player, recently expressed his belief that the match between Doug Polk and Daniel Negreanu convinced him that No-Limit Hold'em (NLH) is dead. He stated, "I even did not suspect that the modern game is so effective. Only a fool will agree to play without additional information." This sentiment sparked a debate among prominent poker players.
Phil Galfond, another renowned player, mentioned that in his younger days, players would deal cards to themselves to understand expectations. Now, solvers are the new tool that provides insights into the game. Galfond noted that while information is available to all, some players will always be stronger.
Daniel Negreanu, who was part of the match with Polk, stated that natural talent is less significant compared to hard work in modern poker. He believes that the acquisition of knowledge is the key to success. Other players, like Doug Polk, commented that eventually, all games will be affected by solvers, and poker is not a game where humans can outplay computers.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
