Phil Ivey: The Legendary Poker Stories You Need to Know

In March 2009, Jeffery 'ActionJeff' Garza opened a thread on 2+2 titled 'Phil Ivey is the Stone Cold Nuts' dedicated to stories about Phil Ivey. This thread grew to 100 pages, filled with anecdotes and observations from players who have interacted with the poker legend.

ActionJeff shared a story where his friend played with Phil Ivey at the World Poker Tour (WPT) and witnessed Ivey performing check-raises on the river, including all-ins, in coordinated board situations. This rare move left his opponents in deep thought, often leading them to fold despite having strong hands. One player even joked with Ivey about his bold strategy, to which Ivey responded with a confident demeanor.

ActionJeff mentioned another instance where Phil Ivey's aura affected the atmosphere at a tournament table. Players would fall silent and focus on him, observing his every move with intense curiosity. Ivey's presence was so commanding that even minor actions, like applying lotion or eating candy, were met with rapt attention from his peers.

Jailhouse recounted an experience from the 2006 WSOP LHE tournament where Phil Ivey remained focused on the game despite distractions around him. Even when a nearby final table caused a commotion, Ivey stayed concentrated on his play, opening almost every hand and winning most of the pots. His friend, who was at the same table, felt a mix of awe and frustration as he witnessed Ivey's dominance.

Woodersonp shared a story where Kimberly Lansing invited Phil Ivey to a WPT champions ceremony, but he declined, stating he only goes where there is play. This anecdote highlights Ivey's dedication to the game and his preference for action over social events.

Mike 'timex' McDonald played with Phil Ivey in a WSOPE NLH tournament and noted that Ivey wore headphones and was frequently bombarded with questions. Despite the constant interruptions, Ivey remained composed, answering briefly before returning to his music. This behavior underscored his focus and professionalism, even in the face of distractions.
