Phil Ivey's Historic 2003 WSOP Loss that Changed Poker Forever
Phil Ivey's memorable hand at the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event altered the course of poker history. Ivey, a four-time WSOP gold bracelet winner, was down to the last 10 players but lost to Chris Moneymaker in a shocking turn of events.
Ivey had pocket nines on a Qh 6s Qs board and hit a nine on the turn. Moneymaker had AQ and wasn’t going anywhere. Ivey was a huge favourite with 83% equity. The river came down an ace, counterfeiting Ivey’s full house.
Ivey was already a four-time WSOP gold bracelet winner at the time.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
