Phil Galfond Shares Insights on Table Selection in Poker
Phil Galfond, a renowned poker player, recently shared his thoughts on table selection in a blog post. He mentioned that he won 2.5 buy-ins against URnotINdanger2 and played against Phil Ivey with a stop-loss of $100,000.
Galfond noted that his personal situation differs significantly from that of 99% of poker professionals. He explained that the games available to him are quite different from those available to most players. For instance, he plays at higher stakes like 200/400-500/1k, while lower stakes like 25/50 are less regular. He also pointed out that the skill difference between players at 25/50 and 200/400 is much smaller than between lower limits.
Galfond advised that players should engage in complex head-up matches to develop their potential. He shared that he played 300/600 against Phil Ivey with a bankroll of 300k, highlighting the importance of playing against regulars for development. Despite his unique situation, Galfond emphasized that playing against regulars is beneficial for a poker player's development.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
