Phil Galfond: Poker Legend on His Career, Preferences, and Run It Once

Phil Galfond, a legendary figure in the poker world, is known for his significant contributions to Pot-Limit Omaha and his educational videos on platforms like Run It Once and Bluefire Poker.

Currently residing in Las Vegas, Galfond has considered returning to Vancouver but has faced logistical challenges. He prefers playing live poker in Las Vegas due to the lack of online action during major events like SCOOP. However, he encountered issues with cashing out from Bovada Poker due to his location in Las Vegas, which led to his account being banned.

Galfond has been playing a mix of big-bet games and studying limit games, although he admits that his understanding of limit games is not as intuitive as his big-bet games. His wife, Fara, supports his poker career and travels, and he believes that periods of intense focus are necessary for becoming a top specialist in poker. Galfond prefers to think on his feet while playing and values the structured strategy of Run It Once, which helps him stay sharp even during long breaks from playing.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
