Online Poker Legality in Dubai: What You Need to Know

Online poker has become a popular pastime for many, but its legality in Dubai and the UAE has long been a subject of debate. Historically, gambling has been prohibited in Islamic law, including for money in the hope of making a lucrative return. This prohibition has been a significant factor in shaping the region's stance on gambling activities.

However, the landscape is changing rapidly. The General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA) has been established to oversee and closely regulate the online poker industry in Dubai. This regulatory body ensures that players are treated fairly and that poker casinos operate with transparency and accountability.

One of the most significant developments is the involvement of Wynn Resorts, led by CEO Craig Billings. Wynn Resorts is the first operator to obtain a poker license to operate a casino in the UAE. The company is not just opening a casino; it is investing billions in a major real estate and hotel project on Wynn Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, with plans to bring in-person poker to the region as early as 2027.
