Online MTT Poker: Trends, Challenges, and the Rise of PKO Tournaments
Pavel Veksler recently wrote a post about the trends in online MTT poker, highlighting the challenges and strategies for players. He noted that there has been an increase in expensive tournaments with smaller guarantees, which benefits only a few top players.
Rob Yong, the owner of partypoker, regularly consults with Patrick Leonard and conducts polls on Twitter to make important decisions. He recently discussed the decline of standard MTTs in favor of PKO (Progressive Knockout) tournaments, citing reasons such as longer durations, multiple re-entries, and lower guarantees compared to PKO.
Artem Vejenkov noted that the number of PKO tournaments has significantly increased, and expensive tournaments with re-entries have become more common. He also mentioned that the field has become more dispersed, requiring players to be more selective. Andrey Kotelnikov mentioned that the cost of playing has increased significantly, with ABI (Average Buy-In) rising from 100 to around 400. The increase in the number of tournaments and the cost of playing has attracted weaker players, but many have since left due to the high costs.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
