North Carolina Considers Raising Sports Betting Taxes
North Carolina is considering raising its sports betting tax rate, following the legalization of sports wagering in 2023. The state has brought in more than $287 million in taxes since mobile betting launched in March 2024. Lawmakers are pushing to hike the tax rate from 18% of gross wagering revenue to between 20% and 30%.
House Speaker Destin Hall (R) commented on the success of the policy, stating, “It’s been a tremendously successful policy in this state.” However, sports betting operators are generally opposed to increased taxes, arguing that higher costs make it more difficult to operate profitably, especially with new competition from prediction markets.
Illinois currently has the highest tax burden on sportsbook operators, while Nevada has the lowest tax rate at 6.75%. The debate over tax rates continues as other states also consider raising their sports betting taxes.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
