Noel Furlong: The Fearless Poker Champion Who Defied the Odds
Noel Furlong, an Irish poker legend, won the main tournament of the World Series of Poker in 1999, becoming the last winner to receive $1 million. His first million, however, was earned through his company Furlong Flooring, which he founded in 1980. Today, Furlong Flooring is one of the largest floor covering manufacturers in Europe with an annual turnover of around $100 million.
Furlong's introduction to poker was serendipitous. In autumn 1984, during a walk with his dogs, he met Terry Rodgers, an Irish bookmaker and gambler who was instrumental in popularizing poker in Ireland. Rodgers organized the Irish Poker Open series and opened the first poker room in Ireland, the Eccentric Club. That evening, Furlong found himself playing heads-up with Puggy Pearson and won $6,000, marking the beginning of his poker career.
Furlong's aggressive and fearless playing style quickly gained him a reputation. He won the main tournament of the Irish Poker Open twice in the late 1980s and first participated in the World Series of Poker in 1989, taking 6th place in the main tournament. His aggressive playstyle impressed Phil Hellmuth, who remembered a notable hand where Furlong bluffed him out of a big pot. In 1999, Furlong's fearless poker journey culminated in his victory at the World Series of Poker, where he qualified for the main tournament through a $1,000 satellite.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
