Nick Petrandzhelo Reveals Common Poker Tournament Mistakes

Poker pro Nick Petrandzhelo has highlighted several common mistakes made by tournament players. One of the key points he emphasizes is the ineffectiveness of small continuation bets (33% of the pot) on flops with an ace against the big blind in MTTs.

According to solvers, larger continuation bets are more effective. For instance, on flops with an ace, solvers recommend bets of 90% or 60% of the pot rather than the smaller 33%. This strategy is particularly effective because it forces the big blind to fold weaker hands, increasing the value of your stronger holdings.

Another critical area Petrandzhelo addresses is the strategy of check-raising. He advises that check-raising should include strong draws, weak pairs with nut potential, and even some wild bluffs. This approach complicates the opponent's decision-making process and can lead to more successful bluffs. Additionally, Petrandzhelo warns against bluffing with 3-bets using suited connectors and suited Ax hands in stacks smaller than 40 BB, as this strategy is less effective in shorter stacks.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
