Netherlands Issues First Online Gaming Licenses, Triton Poker Partners with Kraken

The Netherlands has issued its first 10 online gaming licenses, marking the beginning of a new, officially legalized era for the country's online gaming industry. Unlicensed operators have been informed that they must cease operations or face heavy financial penalties and potential blacklisting from future licensing processes. PokerStars, a prominent operator, recently exited the Dutch market, while GGPoker, which pulled out earlier, has secured one of the new licenses.

Betfair, another industry giant, faces a several-month ban for exiting the market late. Both Betfair and PokerStars are subsidiaries of Flutter Entertainment, which is likely to push for the return of both brands to the Netherlands as soon as possible.

In other news, Triton Poker has partnered with the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken. The firm, known for its Super High Roller events, will advertise Kraken on its new YouTube series Triton Million: A Helping Hand for Charity. The series will recap the 2019 Triton Million, which had a buy-in of £1,050,000, making it the most expensive poker tournament ever. Aaron Zang won £19 million at this event, the largest single payout in poker tournament history. The Covid-19 pandemic prevented a rerun of the event in 2020 and 2021, but whispers in the community suggest that Triton could launch its own digital token, potentially accepting it as payment for future events.
