Mike McDonald Reflects on His Poker Career: From EPT Win to Personal Growth
Mike McDonald, a renowned poker player, recently reflected on his career, marking the 10-year anniversary of his victory at the EPT Dortmund tournament. On February 2, 2008, the then 18-year-old McDonald won the main event, becoming the youngest champion of the European Poker Tour (EPT) and the youngest winner of any major live tournament.
Before his EPT win, McDonald was already a top performer in online poker tournaments and cash games. He had organized a successful backing fund and was playing against some of the best players in the world. His victory in Dortmund solidified his status as a poker prodigy and opened new doors for his career.
In 2010, McDonald took a break from poker to focus on education and personal growth. He returned to poker in 2011 with a renewed focus on balancing his life. His return was marked by a significant winning streak in 2013, where he won seven-figure sums in three tournaments and six-figure sums in two others. This period highlighted his continued success and adaptation in the poker world.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
