Mike McDonald on Coronavirus Bets, Poker Strategy, and WSOP Cancellation
Mike McDonald, a well-known poker professional, recently shared his thoughts on various topics related to his career and the poker world. One of the most controversial topics he discussed was a betting line on coronavirus cases in the US that was removed due to negative reactions. McDonald mentioned that they opened a line on the number of coronavirus cases in the US by the end of March, but after receiving negative comments, they decided to remove it.
McDonald also touched on his personal bet regarding the cancellation of the WSOP series. He revealed that he personally bet $2,000 and 0.5 bitcoins on the cancellation, stating that the bet seemed expensive at the time but became cheaper due to the drop in bitcoin value. He also mentioned that he was ready to bet five times more if necessary.
Looking back at his poker career, McDonald recalled a memorable hand against Jamie Gold. He mentioned that the hand took place 12.5 years ago and that he had not heard from Gold about it until recently. McDonald also discussed the aggressive playing style of players from that era, noting that the poker community was much more lively and aggressive back then. He mentioned specific players like Sean Sheikhan and Sam Grizzly, who were known for their aggressive and sometimes violent behavior.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
