Meteoric Poker Rise: Mike McDonald, Michael DiMichele, and Jason Mercer
Mike "Timex" McDonald's meteoric rise in the poker world began with a significant victory at the EPT Berlin Main Event in January 2008, where he secured €933,600 and became the youngest EPT champion at just 18 years and 5 months old. His journey into poker started at a young age, receiving a set of poker chips for his 15th birthday after losing $57 in an online poker promotion. This early introduction sparked a lifelong passion for the game.
McDonald's first significant online poker earnings came in 2006, when he won over $100k in Multi-Table Tournaments (MTT) over the summer. His impressive performance included making the final table in multiple events and securing a spot in the top three of a Paradise Poker freeroll with a $1,000,000 prize. Despite these successes, McDonald took a break from poker to focus on his education and backing other players. However, his return to the game was marked by continued success, including winning a side event at the Aussie Millions in January 2008 and making the final table in two other events.
Michael DiMichele's poker career also saw dramatic highs and lows. In 2008, he finished 4th in the 8-Game Championship at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and 2nd in the $50,000 HORSE tournament. Despite his early success, DiMichele disappeared from the poker scene for nearly two years before attempting a comeback in 2011. His return was marked by financial struggles, as he declared bankruptcy and attempted to sell stakes in WSOP events. DiMichele's story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of poker and the challenges faced by even the most talented players.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
