Max Silver Loses Bet to John Juanda, $25,000 Goes to Charity

Poker player Max Silver lost a year-long bet with fellow player John Juanda. The bet, made exactly a year ago, involved Silver aiming to do 20 pull-ups. Silver could only do 18 pull-ups by the end of the bet period. John Juanda will donate the $25,000 prize money to charity.

Silver was pleased with his physical improvement despite losing the bet. The poker player had initial struggles with his weight and could only do one pull-up when the bet was made. He improved significantly over the year, especially during the COVID-19 lockdowns when he could train more intensively. Silver's progress impressed Juanda, who initially doubted Silver's ability to achieve significant results.

Silver took to Twitter to express his feelings about the bet, stating that while he felt he could have done 20 pull-ups with perfect execution, he was satisfied with his progress. He tweeted, "18 reps to close out the day and the year long bet. @LuckBoxJuanda is an amazing human being and will be giving the $25k to charity."

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
