Matt Damon Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Stories from Filming Rounders
Matt Damon recently shared insights into the filming of the legendary poker movie Rounders. Matt Damon and Edward Norton were sent to the WSOP Main Event to promote their 1998 poker film Rounders. The studio Miramax spent $20,000 to give them the opportunity to participate in the Main Event, hoping for good stories and promotion.
During the WSOP Main Event, Matt Damon lost to Doyle Brunson. Damon recalled, 'I had kings, and he had aces. I was playing like an ass. All I was thinking about was how to stay in the game as long as possible. I shouldn't have been eliminated in the early rounds. I should have at least made it to the first break. I hoped to make it to the second day, as that would have been a good story.' Unfortunately, Damon did not make it to the second day and lost all his chips to Doyle Brunson, who also did not make it to the prize zone. The winner of the Main Event that year was Scotty Nguyen.
Matt Damon mentioned that he did not understand modern poker strategies, calling current players 'cyborgs'. He said, 'Now there is a whole generation of new young players, both guys and girls. And they are just great, real cyborgs. Poker players now play a game inside a game inside a game. GTO, game theory – all this is beyond my understanding, I don't understand it.'

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
