Maria Konnikova: From Psychology to Poker Champion
Maria Konnikova, a Russian-American writer and psychologist, has made a significant impact in the poker world. Born in Russia in 1984, she moved to the USA at the age of 4 and has since made a name for herself in both academia and literature. Konnikova graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and literature, and earned her PhD in psychology from Columbia University. She currently resides in New York and writes for prestigious publications such as The New York Times and Scientific American.
Konnikova's literary achievements include the best-selling books Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes (2013) and The Confidence Game: Why We Fall for It . . . Every Time (2016). Her fascination with poker began in 2017 when she started a year-long experiment to learn the game from scratch, guided by poker legend Erik Seidel. This experiment was part of her plan to write a book about how poker skills can enhance decision-making in other areas of life.
Konnikova's poker journey has been marked by significant milestones. In 2017, she achieved 13 cash finishes in various tournaments, including second-place finishes in events at Aria, PokerStars Festival Dublin, and The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. Her most notable victory came on January 9, 2018, when she won the PCA National Championship 2018, earning $84,600. This win added to her total tournament earnings of $116,204. Konnikova's success in poker has been supported by her mentor, Erik Seidel, who has praised her dedication and progress. Despite her achievements, Konnikova's status with PokerStars remains unofficial, with the company not confirming her as a team member. However, she continues to wear a PokerStars patch and has been referred to as a 'Friend of PokerStars' by pokernews.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
