Poker Pro Li Jones Criticizes Controversial Tournament Rules
In a recent series of Twitter discussions during EPT video broadcasts, poker professional Ли Джонс highlighted several controversial tournament rules and their applications. One notable incident involved Ivan Freytes during the Grand Final of the EPT in Madrid in 2011. Freytes, with a strong hand, said 'raise' and pushed his chips forward, indicating he was done with the hand. When the tournament director pointed out that he had said 'raise,' Freytes claimed it was due to his poor English. This was not the first time Freytes had used such tactics, and the tournament director, Thomas Kremser, had previously warned his opponents about his deceptive behavior.
Li Jones argued that Freytes should have received a penalty for his actions. His friend and colleague James Hartigan disagreed, stating that 'deception is part of poker.' However, Jones countered that while deception is part of the game, it has clear boundaries outlined in the EPT tournament rules. These rules emphasize the responsibility of players to clearly communicate their intentions and follow the game's procedures.
Another contentious rule discussed was the 'one-chip call.' Many players and viewers disagreed with Jones' criticism, but he pointed out several issues. First, it adds to the dealers' workload, who already have a challenging job. Second, it confuses newcomers, who struggle to keep up with the game's fast pace. Most importantly, it opens the door to various cheating tactics. Jones provided examples of how a player could use this rule to deceive opponents, such as claiming a chip fell out accidentally or that it was meant for the ante of the next hand. He concluded that clear rules are essential for maintaining the integrity and enjoyment of poker tournaments.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
