US Tax Authorities Seek $1.8M from 2010 WSOP Champion Jonathan Duhamel

Jonathan Duhamel won the Main Event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 2010. Since his victory, Duhamel has earned around $10 million in poker winnings, making him one of the top-5 most profitable Canadian poker players.

However, his significant earnings have attracted the attention of the US tax authorities. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is accusing Duhamel of not paying taxes on $1.8 million. The IRS argues that poker is Duhamel's primary source of income, with earnings exceeding $20 million over a decade. They also claim that Duhamel has hidden income from sponsorship deals.

Duhamel, however, maintains that his poker winnings are purely based on luck and chance. He insists that he has fulfilled all his tax obligations, stating that he paid more than half of his $9 million WSOP 2010 winnings in taxes. Regarding his other winnings and the taxes owed on them, Duhamel has yet to comment.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
