The Jamie Gold Rule: How One Poker Player Changed the Game

Jamie Gold won the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event at the age of 36. His victory was remarkable not just for the prize money, but also for his distinctive table mannerisms and ability to convince opponents to fold better hands. This behavior led to the establishment of the Jamie Gold rule, which prohibits discussing the contents of one's hand with another player while the hand is ongoing.

During the 2006 Main Event, Jamie Gold's table talk was particularly notable. In one hand, he convinced an opponent to fold a better hand by saying, “Don’t worry, you still got three kings.” In another hand against poker professional Prahlad Friedman, Gold made a river bluff with just king-high and convinced Friedman to fold the best hand by saying, “You got me. I can’t believe you got me.”

Gold's ability to intimidate and stump his opponents into folding, along with his discussions about the contents of his hand, pushed the boundaries of acceptable table talk. As a result, the Jamie Gold rule was established to prevent such behavior, which could be categorized as a form of collusion.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
