Incredible Casino Stories: Poker Players' Unbelievable Wins and Losses
Casinos are renowned for their thrilling atmosphere and the potential for life-changing moments. Poker players, in particular, have been at the center of many remarkable tales. Here are some of the most incredible stories involving poker players in casinos.
In 2019, Bryn Kenney made history at the Triton Million poker tournament held at the London Hilton on Park Lane. With a £1million entry fee plus a £50k donation to charity, the stakes were incredibly high. After three days of intense play, only two players remained. A heads-up deal saw Bryn Kenney walk off with £16,890,509 ($20,563,324), although he technically lost the title to Aaron Zang. This win secured Kenney the largest tournament prize in poker history and propelled him to the top of the all-time money winners list.
Not all casino stories involve winning big. In 2010, the European Poker Tour Main Event prizepool was robbed in broad daylight at Berlin’s Grand Hyatt Hotel casino. Armed gunmen targeted the €4,725,000 ($6,409,126) prizepool, with a chunk of it on display. Although the police apprehended four men and three were sentenced to prison, only €4k of the €242,000 ($327,000) stolen was ever recovered. Despite the robbery, Kevin McPhee went on to win the event and €1,000,000 ($1,356,428), proving that honesty can indeed be the most lucrative policy.
Another unforgettable moment involved Jake Cody, an English poker player who had an amazing run at the Dusk Till Dawn casino in 2018. Cody had just won £42,670 ($59,393) in the £2,200 buy-in High Roller event at the UK Poker Championships. In a daring move, Cody asked the casino owner, Rob Yong, if he could place his entire winnings on a spin of the roulette wheel. Yong agreed and spun the wheel himself. Cody's bet on black paid off, doubling his winnings to £85,340 ($118,786). This unique double-up led Yong to remove the roulette tables from his cardroom, though not directly due to Cody's bet.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
