iGaming Horizon Episode #6: Betfred Fined, Bragg Gaming Layoffs, and More
The latest episode of iGaming Horizon, hosted by Nate and Mike, delves into the significant developments in the gambling industry. The episode covers a range of topics, including regulatory changes, fines, layoffs, and legal issues.
The UK Gambling Commission is introducing financial risk assessment checks to protect vulnerable players. Players aged 25 or older will trigger a check if they exceed £5,000 in net deposits within 24 hours. For players under 25, the threshold is £2,500. The final trigger for players aged 25 or older is £1,000 in 24 hours or £3,000 within 90 days. The regulator aims to keep the process frictionless to avoid driving players to the black market.
Betfred has been fined £900,000 due to regulatory failures in the UK. The UK Gambling Commission found social responsibility failures at Petfre Gibraltar Limited, the operator of Betfred. The regulator noted that Betfred did not have strong enough processes to identify signs of gambling harm, such as spending patterns and time spent gambling. One serious case involved a Betfred customer who lost £17,900 in 24 hours. The Commission acknowledged that Betfred acted quickly after concerns were raised.
Tim Miller, Executive Director of Policy and Research at the UK Gambling Commission, is stepping down in September 2026. Miller has been involved in major UKGC work, including the Gambling Act Review, affordability checks, age verification, and consumer protection measures. Ahead of his retirement, Miller played a central role in the fight against illegal gambling, emphasizing the need for the licensed market to remain competitive.
Bragg Gaming Group has announced layoffs affecting 19% of its global workforce. The company aims to become a sustainable, cash-generative business with around €10.5m in annualized savings. The layoffs are part of a restructuring effort that includes AI transformation, which aims to increase efficiency but also creates uncertainty for employees.
Australia's National Anti-Scam Centre has created a dedicated task force to combat fake casino scams. In 2025, losses from these scams reached AU$1.6m, compared with AU$449,000 the year before. The task force was formed in response to the significant number of incidents, which surpassed 800. The fake casinos accepted Australian customers, took deposits, and created problems when players tried to withdraw.
North Carolina has introduced a 6% tax on prediction markets and raised the sports betting tax from 18% to 23%. This approach is interesting because the state is taxing, rather than banning, prediction markets. Taxing is seen as easier than banning, as states that try to block prediction markets face pushback from the CFTC and major companies.
Brendan Sorsby has been denied participation in the Canadian Football League due to his gambling history. After the NFL route closed, the Canadian Football League has also said it will not recruit him or allow its teams to sign him. Sorsby admitted to betting more than $90,000 himself or through people he knew. He was ruled ineligible by the NCAA, challenged the decision, won an injunction, but then Texas Tech decided not to field him.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
