Reliving Iconic WSOP Main Event Finals: 2006-2009

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event has seen many memorable moments, and the finals from 2006 to 2009 are no exception. In 2006, Jamie Gold won the WSOP Main Event with a prize of $12,000,000. His key hand against Paul Vasika and Michael Binger is available to watch in the video archive of GT with commentary by Ilya Gorodecky.

Moving to 2007, Jerry Yang emerged victorious against Phillip Hilm. This final is notable for Hilm's aggressive style, which ultimately led to his early exit. Yang's win was significant, but he faced legal troubles post-victory, including issues with US tax authorities.

In 2008, Ivan Demidov's second-place finish significantly impacted the development of Russian poker. His dramatic hands, such as the one against Chiño Ramírez where he held 9-9 against Ramírez's 10-10, are still remembered fondly. Demidov's performance was a pivotal moment for Russian poker enthusiasts.

Finally, in 2009, Joe Cada secured his victory against Antoine Saout. Cada's win was particularly notable as he had previously faced criticism for his playstyle, but he managed to overcome these doubts with a strong performance.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
