Gavin 'gavz101' Cochrane: The Rise and Challenges of a Poker Pro
Gavin 'gavz101' Cochrane is a 23-year-old English professional poker player who has been playing pot-limit Omaha for 3 years. Cochrane has won around $1,000,000 in high-stakes games on PokerStars since the beginning of the year. He studied neurology but spent more time playing poker than on his university assignments.
Cochrane first played $25/50 stakes in late 2009 and initially had a winning streak. However, his performance deteriorated, and he lost about $95,000 in a single session playing $100/200 against Ashton Griffin and others. This loss was part of a larger downturn where he lost 5/6 of his bankroll over 8 months due to poor performance and a trip to Vegas.
Despite these setbacks, Cochrane has shown resilience and adaptability. He played 300,000 hands at $1/2 and $5/10 stakes without making a profit, eventually losing $500,000. However, he has since shown good results playing $100/$200 and occasionally $200/400 and $300/600 stakes. Cochrane won $600,000 in a single session, noting that he does not perceive his bankroll as real money.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
