The Evolution of Slot Machines: From 19th Century to Online Gaming

The modern slot machines we know today have a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. The precursor to these machines was invented in 1891 and was based on poker, featuring five drums with 50 card faces. This simple game, introduced in Brooklyn, New York, quickly gained popularity. Players would insert a nickel and pull a lever to spin the drums, hoping for the best combination. However, this machine lacked an automatic payout mechanism, so winnings were determined by the establishment.

Charles Fey, a San Francisco mechanic and inventor, addressed the issues with the original poker-based game. Between 1887 and 1895, he devised a new automatic mechanism using five symbols—spades, hearts, diamonds, horseshoes, and a Liberty Bell—and three reels. This design allowed for a working automatic payout mechanism, with the most rewarding prize being ten nickels for lining up three Liberty Bell symbols. The Liberty Bell slot machine became an even bigger hit than its predecessor, spawning an entire slots industry across the country.

Fey's invention was banned in California soon after, but his legacy lived on. The 1899 Liberty Bell slot machine is now part of the Nevada State Museum’s Fey Collection. Over the decades, slot machine technology evolved significantly. In the early 1960s, Bally introduced the first electromechanical slot machine. A decade later, in the mid-1970s, the first video slot machine was invented, marking another major breakthrough in the industry. With the rise of online casinos in the mid-1990s, slot machines became the dominant game in both land-based and online gambling, offering endless variations and options for players worldwide.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
