Poker Pro Dusty Schmidt Reveals Mental Health Struggles
Dusty Schmidt, a professional poker player, has openly discussed the impact of poker on his health and mental state. At the age of 23, Schmidt had a heart attack, which led him to switch from golf to poker. This transition was not without its challenges, as Schmidt later revealed significant changes in his brain due to his professional poker career.
Schmidt's wife complained about his deteriorating communication skills, noting that he often struggled with basic conversations. This deterioration in communication skills was just one of the many issues Schmidt faced. He also experienced significant anxiety and found it difficult to concentrate on tasks. Despite these challenges, Schmidt continued to play poker professionally and even consulted with Dr. Daniel Amen for a brain scan.
Dr. Daniel Amen's clinic uses SPECT, a special method of brain scanning, to diagnose and treat various mental health issues. Schmidt's scan revealed that his brain had developed an algorithm that enhanced his information processing during poker games. However, this algorithm also caused him to 'stall' when trying to perform other tasks, leading to communication difficulties and anxiety.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
