Doyle Brunson recently shared his memories of Amarillo Slim, a legendary poker player who passed away recently. Brunson recalled a conversation he had with Slim when he was in hospice, highlighting their friendship and the adventures they shared.
Amarillo Slim, born 83 years ago in Arkansas, moved to Texas with his family. He became one of the best pool players in Texas during his youth. Slim served in the Navy and won a small fortune playing cards during his voyages. After his service, he returned to Amarillo, Texas, and earned his nickname.
Brunson and Slim, along with Brian Roberts, formed a partnership and traveled playing poker and other games. Their partnership lasted seven years, during which they faced numerous challenges, including robberies and arrests. Despite the dangers, they continued their adventures because of their love for poker. Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
