Doyle Brunson: Legendary Poker Stories and Life Lessons
Doyle Brunson, the legendary poker player, recently opened up about his life and career, offering a glimpse into the world of poker from the 1960s to today. At 85 years old, Brunson feels he is in 95% mental and 10% physical shape, a testament to his enduring spirit and love for the game.
Brunson played in Bobby's Room almost every day during the World Series of Poker. He mentioned that he played poker for 60 years, and his sessions usually last until 10 or 11 PM. His wife waits for him to return home before going to sleep, a routine they have maintained for 57 years.
One of the most striking stories Brunson shared was about a player named Virgil who died during a poker game. Virgil collapsed and died immediately after a hand against Brunson. Another player also died during a game of lowball poker. These incidents highlight the intense and sometimes dangerous nature of poker in its early days.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
