Doyle Brunson Remembers Johnny Moss: The Legendary Poker Player's Escape from Las Vegas
Doyle Brunson wrote about his memories of Johnny Moss, a legendary poker player, in his autobiography "The Godfather of Poker".
Johnny Moss was a three-time winner of the main tournament and holder of 9 WSOP bracelets. Doyle Brunson and Johnny Moss became close friends in Texas despite a 25-year age difference. However, Brunson never liked Moss's tendency to cheat, although it was somewhat acceptable in the 1940s and 1950s.
Johnny Moss had to flee Las Vegas after being caught cheating in the late 1940s. Moss was involved in a poker game with Gus Greenbaum, a representative of the Chicago mafia. Moss used a complex system of mirrors to read opponents' cards and transmit the information to himself. When Greenbaum's men discovered Moss's accomplices hiding in the ceiling, Moss took full responsibility for the scheme. Greenbaum's men released Moss's accomplices, but Moss was not so lucky. Moss's accomplices returned with guns, forcing Greenbaum and his associates to release Moss. Moss was warned never to return to Las Vegas after the incident.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
