Doyle Brunson Reminisces About the Greatest Poker Players of All Time
Doyle Brunson, a legendary figure in the world of poker, recently shared his memories of the greatest poker players he has known. In a heartfelt reflection, Brunson named four players who he believes are the best: Johnny Moss, Walter 'Puggy' Pearson, David 'Chip' Reese, and Brian 'Sailor' Roberts.
Johnny Moss is credited with bringing poker to Las Vegas and popularizing it. According to Brunson, poker would have died in Texas without Moss's contributions. Moss's influence ensured that poker reached Las Vegas in the form we know today, with tournaments involving thousands of participants.
Walter 'Puggy' Pearson was a key figure in promoting poker in Las Vegas for three decades, from the 1960s to the 1980s. His efforts were instrumental in making the World Series of Poker (WSOP) the recognized brand it is today. David 'Chip' Reese was known as one of the best players in any game, always ready to play with anyone. Brian 'Sailor' Roberts excelled in no-limit hold'em but did not reach his full potential due to personal choices. Brunson believes that Roberts had the potential to be the greatest player in history if he had chosen to focus on his game.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
