Doug Polk: Phil Hellmuth is the Luckiest Poker Player Ever
Phil Hellmuth, a Poker Hall of Famer with 16 WSOP gold bracelets and more than $27 million in tournament winnings, has been labeled the luckiest poker player of all time by Doug Polk. Polk's controversial statement came amidst discussions about Hellmuth's placement in the fans' GOAT voting list.
Kane Kalas, however, attributes Hellmuth's success to his intuition, noting that Hellmuth doesn't study poker off the felt. "He has some of the best poker intuition of any player on this list or any player of all time. The reason I am able to say that confidently is that the guy doesn’t do any work off the felt. He doesn’t study, he just shows up and wins consistently! And that’s because of his intuition!"
Hellmuth's recent performances have been impressive. At the US Poker Open, he secured two 2nd places, a 4th, and another cash, placing him 5th in the overall leaderboard. His High Stakes Duel run was unprecedented, winning seven straight heads-up battles and defeating notable players like Antonio Esfandiari and Daniel Negreanu.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
