Dan Smith vs. MJ Gonzales: High-Stakes Poker Battle in Las Vegas
Dan Smith and MJ Gonzales are playing a high-stakes heads-up poker match in Ivey’s Room at the Aria Casino, Las Vegas. The pair have been sat with seven figure stacks in what must be the biggest stakes played in a heads-up match in recent times.
Dan Smith has won more than $37 million from live tournaments during his career. MJ Gonzales has racked up only a million from live events but he is a cash game specialist. In fact, MJ Gonzales is the guy who coached Daniel Negreanu during his match against Doug Polk earlier this year.
There have been two sessions so far, with one win each for the duo. Gonzales dropped $32k on the first day after being down $280k right off the bat, and he picked up a tidy $72k win in the following session. Joey Ingram was quick to offer his services so hopefully by the time the next session is played we will hear where we can watch.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
