Chris Cairns: From Cricket Legend to Legal Battles
Chris Cairns, born on June 13, 1970, in Picton, New Zealand, is a name synonymous with cricket excellence and controversy. Known for his explosive batting and disciplined fast-medium bowling, Cairns was a pivotal figure in New Zealand’s success in international cricket during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Cairns' cricket career spanned from 1989 to 2006, during which he achieved numerous records. He formerly held the world record for most sixes in Tests with 87, a record later bettered by Adam Gilchrist. Additionally, Cairns held the record for the fastest century in ODIs, scoring it in just 75 balls. One of his most significant achievements was leading New Zealand to victory in the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy, marking the country's first major ICC title win.
However, Cairns' career has been marred by legal controversies. In 2010, Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi accused Cairns of match-fixing. Cairns sued Modi for libel and was eventually acquitted. Despite this, Cairns faced further allegations of match-fixing from former New Zealand cricketer Lou Vincent and Brendon McCullum. Cairns consistently denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted of all charges of perjury on November 30, 2015. Beyond the legal battles, Cairns has faced personal tragedies, including the loss of his sister Louise in a train accident in August 1993 and a major heart attack in August 2021 that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
