Brian Hastings Faces Backlash for PokerStars Pseudonym
Poker player Brian Hastings has found himself in the midst of a controversy after it was revealed that he used the pseudonym NoelHayes on PokerStars.
Hastings initially responded to the backlash by stating that he was focused on the World Series of Poker and had nothing to say publicly at the moment. He also suggested that people should focus on self-improvement instead of blaming others. In a message to David Baker, Hastings offered to compensate him for their sessions played under the pseudonym NoelHayes, expressing hope that they could still be friends in the future.
Several prominent poker players have weighed in on the controversy. Daniel Cates expressed support for Hastings, stating that he had lost significant amounts of money to him. Vanessa Selbst initially expressed ambiguity about the situation but later apologized and withdrew from the discussion. Mikkka Anttonen criticized PokerStars' security for not catching Hastings' use of a pseudonym. Phil Ivey jokingly referred to Hastings as Noel during a tournament, saying 'Alright Noel' when Hastings raised. James Obst criticized Hastings for his behavior and supported David Baker's stance, calling him a 'hero' for exposing the issue.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
