Brek Shutten Wins Record-Breaking World Poker Tour Event
The World Poker Tour Hard Rock Poker Showdown 2021 set a new record with 2,482 participants, making it the largest field in WPT history. The tournament, held at the Hard Rock Casino in Florida, had a prize pool of $7,942,400, with each player paying a $3,500 buy-in.
The winner was Brek Shutten, a 32-year-old from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Shutten is a nurse in the intensive care unit and a father of four. He works on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, making his victory even more notable. Shutten's previous largest win was $135,210 for third place in the WSOP Circuit Hammond Main Event in 2019.
In the final hand, Shutten had 8♣-5♥ and raised 2.5 million from the button. Steven Snyder, who finished in second place, called with A♦-2♦. The flop was 10♦-5♦-5♣, giving Shutten a trip five. Snyder checked his flush draw, and Shutten bet 2 million. Snyder check-raised to 4.8 million, and Shutten called. The turn was 7♥, and Snyder bet 5.2 million into the pot. Shutten went all-in, and Snyder called with his remaining 21.9 million chips and his flush draw. The river was 2♣, securing Shutten's victory and the title.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
