Andy Bill's Poker Adventure in Las Vegas: A Tale of Two Players
In early February 2001, Andy Bill, a 48-year-old banker and real estate businessman from Dallas, found himself at a poker club in Bellagio. Having concluded his business meetings, Bill sought entertainment and chose to try his hand at poker. Unlike his past experiences with blackjack, where he counted cards and won up to $50,000 on weekends, Bill was new to poker. He started with a $15/$30 limit hold'em game and quickly moved to an $80/$160 table, where he faced professional players who saw him as easy prey.
Bill's physical presence was imposing, with a tall, broad frame and sharp facial features. He spoke softly and preferred listening, but his gaze could be piercing. His logical mind and keen observation skills made him a formidable opponent. Despite being a novice at poker, Bill's intuition and aggressive play style allowed him to hold his own against seasoned professionals.
Mike Lang, a professional poker player of a similar age to Bill, joined the game. Lang's appearance and demeanor were the polar opposite of Bill's. Lang's face was pale and puffy, a sign of years of alcohol abuse. He was talkative and often made jokes or complained about his life. Lang had a history of financial struggles despite his poker talent, often borrowing money and paying it back. He had won $331,000 in the main tournament of the World Poker Challenge series in Reno just days before joining the game at Bellagio.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
