Adrian Mateos' WSOP 2022: High Stakes and Professional Rivals

Adrian Mateos Diaz, one of the most successful Europeans at WSOP, participated in a $10,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament with 173 remaining players out of 400 starters. Mateos started the day with a stack of 297,000 chips, the largest at his table, and played against notable players like Phil Ivey and Jason Koon.

Mateos described the tournament as having a poor table with all professionals, including himself, Phil Ivey, Jason Koon, and others. He mentioned that he often plays against Phil Ivey and Jason Koon, especially against Jason. Mateos had a hand where he checked with K4o on the flop and river, deciding to fold after his opponent made a large bet.

Mateos played against Paul Volpe, a regular in high-stakes tournaments, and described him as an expert in mixed games and experienced in no-limit hold'em. Mateos mentioned that he often plays against Paul Volpe and that Volpe grinds WSOP every year. Mateos had a hand where he called a raise with T9o from the small blind and checked with a middle-strength hand on the turn and river.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
