2020's High-Stakes Poker Showdowns: Galfond, Negreanu, and Polk
2020 was a year marked by intense high-stakes poker head-to-head challenges among some of the most renowned players in the game. These challenges not only tested the skills of the participants but also kept the poker community on the edge of their seats.
Phil Galfond's Head-to-Head Challenges
Phil Galfond, the founder of Run It Once Poker, initiated several high-stakes head-to-head challenges in 2020. Galfond won several of these challenges in Pot Limit Omaha (PLO). His first notable challenge was against Bill Perkins, but their match did not start immediately. Before that, Galfond faced off against the player known as "VeniVidi1993", a battle that saw Galfond even taking a break due to tilt. However, Galfond managed to turn the game around with several winning sessions, ultimately securing his victory.
Galfond also won a mini-challenge against Dan Kayts, who acknowledged Galfond's superiority in a video, calling him "the best person and player in poker." Galfond's other victories include a challenge against "ActionFreak", where he led almost the entire time and won with a comfortable advantage of 115,000€. Currently, Galfond is leading his challenge against Chance Cornut, with 13,500 hands remaining.
Daniel Negreanu vs. Douglas Polk
The rivalry between Daniel Negreanu and Douglas Polk has been ongoing for years. Their head-to-head challenge in 2020 involved 25,000 hands of 200$/400$ limit Texas Hold'em. The challenge started on November 4, with the first 200 hands played live, which Negreanu won by 117,000$. As the challenge progressed, Polk began to gain momentum, winning several sessions and leading by nearly a million dollars at one point. However, Negreanu started to make a comeback in subsequent sessions. As of now, Polk leads by 770,000$.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
