World Series of Poker Sets Records as It Approaches 50th Anniversary

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) will celebrate its 50th anniversary in a few days. This year, the WSOP organizers have prepared 89 tournaments, the most in the series' history. The most affordable tournament in 2018 had a buy-in of $365.

The Colossus tournament in 2015 had 22,374 players, with the winner receiving over 1,100 buy-ins. The main tournament in 2006 had 8,773 players, with Jamie Gold winning $12,000,000. Martin Jacobson won $10,000,000 in 2014 by defeating 6,682 players.

Johnny Moss was the first WSOP champion, determined by a vote after a week of high-stakes cash games. Antonio Esfandiari has won the most prize money in WSOP tournaments, totaling $22,283,326. Mike Sexton has made money in WSOP tournaments for 31 consecutive years. Phil Hellmuth has the most tournament bracelets (15) and the most final table appearances (61).

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
