Wisconsin's New Sports Betting Law Faces Legal Challenge
Wisconsin legalized statewide online sports betting in April 2023. The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL) filed a lawsuit against Wisconsin Act 247, claiming it violates the state's constitution. The lawsuit argues that mobile sports betting is not among the exceptions to Wisconsin's gambling prohibition. The lawsuit also challenges Governor Tony Evers’ plan to negotiate new tribal gaming agreements to implement the law.
WILL represents two taxpayer organizations: The Brown County Taxpayers Association and Citizens Defending Liberty. The lawsuit seeks to declare the sports betting law unconstitutional, comparing it to a “sports gambling monopoly.”
A poll by Marquette University Law School found that 64% of Wisconsin residents oppose the legalization of online sports betting. The outcome of the lawsuit remains uncertain, but it could potentially halt or permanently block sports betting in Wisconsin.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
