Top 10 Mistakes Poker Players Make at Micro Limits
Poker players at micro limits often face unique challenges that can significantly impact their win rates. One of the most critical factors to consider is the rake, which significantly impacts the profitability of marginal hands. On limits up to NL10, the rake is approximately 10-12 bb per 100 hands. This means that if your win rate is 20bb/100, the rake effectively halves your profit.
Rake primarily affects the caller, not the raiser. Therefore, the frequency of our open raises will not change much with the increase or decrease of the rake. However, when we encounter an open raise or 3-bet, we should fold more often. For example, on NL25, the call frequency is 31.3%, 3-bet is 5.1%, and fold is 63.6%. In contrast, on NL1K, the call frequency is 41.4%, 3-bet is 4.5%, and fold is 54.1%.
Another common mistake is tilt, which significantly reduces a player's win rate over the long term. A regular NL10 player losing 4 stacks due to tilt effectively loses a month's worth of work. It is crucial to recognize and address tilt to maintain a healthy win rate. Players should allocate equal time for playing and studying poker theory to improve their skills and avoid common pitfalls.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
