Steve Hendry: Poker Lessons from a Snooker Legend

Steve Hendry, the legendary snooker player, was introduced to poker by another legend, Steve Davis. Davis showed him how to play online for free, and Hendry's billiard skills, particularly his positioning and patience, proved useful in poker. Hendry and his friends quickly fell in love with the game, often playing late into the night, which Hendry admits was dangerous before a snooker match.

Hendry's first significant poker experience was at the WSOP in Las Vegas, sponsored by Betfred. However, his lack of experience showed as he was eliminated after only three hours. The following year, Hendry returned to the US, better prepared, and with the help of professional poker player Ram Vaswani, he lasted longer in the tournament. Despite his efforts, Hendry struggled to find his poker game online and eventually quit due to constant losses. He noted that his initial success in poker came from his lack of understanding, which made his opponents uncertain.

Hendry's natural talent in snooker was evident from a young age. He quickly improved his skills and gained confidence, allowing him to bounce back from losses. This confidence was a key trait that Hendry lacked in poker. His aggressive style in snooker, dominating in the 90s, is similar to his poker strategy of intimidating opponents. Hendry's ability to control his emotions, developed during his teenage years in Scotland, is a key trait in both snooker and poker. He won four of his seven snooker championships against Jimmy White, using his ability to read his opponent's emotions.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
