Steffen Sontheimer on Poker: No Emotions, Just Strategy
Steffen Sontheimer, a renowned poker player, recently shared his experiences and views on the game. He mentioned that he is happy to be leaving Las Vegas after spending two weeks there, focusing only on the most interesting tournaments. Sontheimer explained that he did not stay for the entire World Series of Poker because the schedule was inconvenient and the financial benefits were not significant.
Growing up in the town of Gernsbach, known for its mountains, river, and forests, Sontheimer had a typical childhood filled with sports and family time. His mother works at German television, and his father works at Mercedes-Benz, leading to frequent family moves. Sontheimer started playing poker during his university years, initially on micro-limits. He recalled, "I played on micro-limits during my studies, max $0.5/$1."
Sontheimer's first significant poker achievement was an invitation from Fedor Holz to join him in Canada for the SCOOP tournament. He remembered, "Fedor Holz messaged me in winter 2014, inviting me to Canada for SCOOP." Sontheimer's first live tournament cash came in 2015, but he had already won $13.5 million online. Despite his success, Sontheimer approaches the game with a strategic mindset, focusing on the numbers rather than the emotions.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
