Sergio Casteluccio Reflects on His Poker Career and the State of Italian Poker

Sergio Casteluccio, a prominent Italian poker player, has had a career marked by both success and disappointment. In 2012, he was on the verge of winning the Grand Final of the European Poker Tour (EPT) in Monte Carlo. With the largest stack in the top 4 of the main tournament, he quickly lost all his chips, and the title went to Mohsin Charania.

The following year, Casteluccio made a deep run in the Main Event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP), finishing in 14th place and earning $451,398. Despite these achievements, he remains the 9th most successful Italian tournament poker player on HendonMob, with total winnings of $1,740,896.

Casteluccio's biggest poker disappointment was his loss at the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo. Reflecting on that experience, he mentioned that he felt he could have won the tournament but made a crucial mistake in one hand, which led to his elimination. He also expressed his thoughts on the state of poker in Italy, noting that the current challenges are due to poor management and regulatory issues. He believes that the popularity of poker in Italy has declined, and the last real Italian poker contract is held by Max Pescatori.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
