Powerball's UK Expansion: A Boost for Online Poker Prize Pools?
The Powerball lottery has seen significant growth in recent years, with winners taking home over $2 billion in November 2022 and almost $1.8 billion in October 2023. This growth is set to continue with the lottery's expansion into the United Kingdom. Powerball tickets went on sale in the UK earlier this week, marking the first time another country has been part of the lottery. This addition increases the player pool by almost 70 million, nearly doubling the population of California, the most populous American state.
For UK players, the ticket price is £4 ($5.35), with the same amount contributed to the prize pool as American players. However, winners in the UK will receive annual payments for 30 years instead of a lump sum. This expansion could inspire similar growth for online poker by increasing player and prize pools.
In the U.S., online poker is legal on a state-by-state basis, and shared player pools help smaller markets survive through increased player and prize pools. However, only a handful of states are part of the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA). Connecticut legalized online gaming in 2022 but hasn’t joined MSIGA due to its low population. Maine became the first state to legalize online gaming since Rhode Island in January, with the ability to join MSIGA included in the law. Ontario won a ruling in the Ontario Court of Appeal in November that would allow operators to pool players with those in other provinces and countries. This ruling could have a major impact on the Canadian online poker landscape and possibly the U.S. market if the provinces are allowed to merge player pools with American states.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
