Mastering Masking Ranges in Pot-Limit Omaha: Strategies for the Small Blind

Many professional poker players pride themselves on their ability to read their opponents' hands, but their own standard lines of play are often considered unreadable. In Pot-Limit Omaha, transparent ranges are particularly dangerous on the preflop, as you will have to play them on three subsequent streets in a growing pot. A poorly masked range can significantly harm your win rate.

When a player raises from an early position, they typically do not think about masking their range, as they have strong hands that will be played in any situation, and folding is a good alternative with all other cards. In a previous article on Cardquant, the authors discussed the most complex preflop scenario in Pot-Limit Omaha: the optimal strategy on the preflop at a 6-max table when you are on the small blind and all players before you have folded. The analysis convinced the authors that in this situation, it is necessary to develop two ranges: one for raising and one for limping.

Many players who follow this advice in practice find that their limping range causes them problems. The investigation aims to show what problems arise when creating a limping range consisting of hands that are not strong enough for raising. One of the worst strategies is to divide the ranges by the strength of the hand: the best 35% of hands are raised, and the rest are played as limps. This practice leads to a range consisting of hands in the 36%-60% category being very weak on many textures with high cards.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
