Poker World Abuzz: Legal Dramas, High-Stakes Action, and New Variants
The poker world has been abuzz with recent events, ranging from legal dramas to high-stakes tournaments and new poker variants. Several Chinese businessmen were arrested in Las Vegas in July 2014 for illegal betting on the World Cup. Among them was Paul Fu, known online as MalACEsia, who was arrested in Macau in June 2014 for similar charges and later released on bail. Paul Fu was the only defendant who decided to fight the charges in court, while his colleagues, including Richard Yong, pleaded guilty and received conditional sentences.
Paul Fu's bail was posted by Phil Ivey and Andrew Robl, and he remained under house arrest in Las Vegas. In April, a federal judge ruled that the evidence against Fu was obtained illegally, leading to the dismissal of all charges. Fu was then free to leave the country, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
In other news, Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan appeared in a YouTube video discussing a new poker variant called Six Plus Hold'em. This variant uses a shortened deck and has gained attention in the poker community. Additionally, a high-stakes cash game with a $400/$800 ante and a minimum buy-in of $250,000 will be held from June 29 to July 1, with Antonio Esfandiari among the participants. The event will be broadcast live on Poker Central's Twitch channel, offering viewers an up-close look at the action.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
