Poker Player's Wild Encounter with Mysterious High Roller in Los Angeles

In 2017, poker player Len Ashby met a mysterious Chinese high roller named Hu in Los Angeles. Hu borrowed money from Ashby and other poker players, accumulating a debt of $160,000 over 17 days.

Hu initially borrowed $20,000 and gradually increased his debt, with players agreeing to keep playing to ensure the game didn't fall apart. Hu's poor poker skills led to constant playing, with some players resorting to stimulants to stay awake.

Hu briefly left the poker table to play baccarat and returned with $120,000, reducing his debt. Hu's friend JC Tran informed Ashby that Hu had bought a new Bentley, which was seen as a good sign. Hu returned with a large sum of money, repaying his debt of $160,000 and continuing to play until the end of the week.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
