Poker Strategy: Understanding Minimum Defense Frequency (MDF)
When an opponent bets, there are three possible actions: call, fold, and raise. Minimum Defense Frequency (MDF) shows how often you need to call or raise in response to an opponent's bet to make their bluffs unprofitable. The formula for MDF is: (Pot size) / (Pot size + Bet size) multiplied by 100 to get the percentage.
When to Use MDF
MDF is used to develop intuition for moving up limits where regulars will constantly pressure your ranges. It is not frequently used in low-stakes games where most opponents have unbalanced strategies. MDF should not be used when defending from a check-raise on the flop out of position or when the opponent's range consists only of made hands.
Pot Odds
Pot odds should be calculated in almost every hand, expressed as ratios or percentages. The formula for pot odds is: (Bet size) / (Pot size + Bet size + Number of chips needed to call) multiplied by 100 to get the percentage.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
